What is a Birthing Doula?

Megan Hope OddoA doula is professionally trained in childbirth who provides emotional, physical and informational support to the woman who is expecting, in labor or has recently given birth. The doula's role is to help women have a safe, memorable and empowering birthing experience. A doula is a birthing support person to assist the mother to be and her partner through the birth process. My services include a free phone consultation and face to face meeting. I also provide two prenatal visits, assistance in creating a birth plan that allows you to decide how you will deliver your baby, continuous support from the beginning of labor until after the baby is born. After the baby is born, I provide a post partum follow up meeting to discuss your delivery and to go over any questions you may have. Six weeks of phone support after the birth of your baby to assist you in questions you may have with breastfeeding or baby care is also included in my services. I support the mother’s option for a natural delivery and offer many relaxation techniques to reduce the amount of pain medication during labor and delivery. I am independent and self-employed. As your doula, I am working for you, not your caregiver or hospital.
